MET and HTS 2016, the International Conferences and Exhibitions on MATERIALS ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (MET) And HEAT TREAT SHOW (HTS), was held during October 12-14, 2016 at CIDCO Exhibition Centre, Vashi, Navi Mumbai.
The events were inaugurated by Mr. Manohar Parrikar, Hon’ble Defense Minister, Govt. of India. Sharing the Dais with him were the Padma Vibhushan Awardee – Dr. R.A. Mashelkar;CFO JSW group Mr. MVS Seshagiri Rao; President, ASM International Mr. Jon D. Tirpak; Chairman Organizing committee Mr. Pradeep Goyal& Secretary Organizing Committee Mr. Premkumar Aurora.
Mr. Manohar Parrikar, while doing the round of the Exhibition was very impressed with the content and the display of the participants, and encouraged the participants to interact and make the most of this opportunity. He also spent time in the Innovation pavilion put by young entrepreneurs.
In his inaugural address, citing examples, he emphasized the importance of ‘Make in India’ initiatives, which will result in increase in manufacturing in Defense Sector where India has the capabilityto cope with the stringent quality requirements of the sector. He also said that the FDI in the defense sector has increased in these last 2 years, many agreements have taken place, some of these being in manufacture of Aircraft, Submarine, Marine Helicopters, etc. The FDI is going to see further increase in the coming years
The powerful Conference sessions were well attended by over 400+ Delegates. Dr. R.A. Mashelkarin his Keynote address talked about ‘Make in India – from a personal perspective’. He mentioned that Make in India would be the driver for a world class Indian Innovation Ecosystems. Examples of Make in India in Defense sector include radar, air to air missile, light combat aircraft, light combat helicopter, unmanned aerial vehicle. He further elaborated with examples of affordable excellence e.g. 40X cheaper high quality hepatitis vaccine, 100X cheaper high quality cataract eye surgery, 20X cheaper high quality open heart surgery and 300x cheaper high quality artificial foot. Yet another instance of Make in India mentioned by him was that India is the 1st country to enter Mars orbit in first attempt at a record low cost of $ 74 m.
The 3 Plenary and 7 technical sessions each in MET & HTS track had almost 30% invited speakers of international repute. Two sessions which caught imagination of the delegates were the session on “Innovations in materials & processes” and “Additive manufacturing (3D printing)”.
Two more sessions namely Ministerial Forum and the special session on Steelput the conference in a different category. While the Ministerial forum had The Minister of defense Ch. Birender Singh as the chief guest, Minister of industry from Telangana Mr. Tejavath talked about opportunities in his state for the new businesses and presentation from State of Jharkhand showcased developments in the state. The session moderated by Mr. Pradeep Goyal was well attended.
The 2nd session on steel had no. of speakers including Dr. Surya Singh from British Steel, Dr. Date from IIT Bombay, Mr. Jon Tirpak, ASM President & Prof. Sato from Chubu university, Japan. Eminent consultant Mr. Vijay Saha, also addressed the gathering in the session. The session saw a wide range of topics on steel ranging from requirement of special steel, additive manufacturing vis-à-vis steel forging, use of microwave technique for processing of iron ore & hot stamping of steel sheet being presented by the elite speakers.
One more initiative taken by the organizers was “Student outreach program” under which 2 special programs were arranged – Mini Materials camp to excite the young mind and attract them towards the field of materials, was aimed at students of 11th& 12th standard, and consisted of materials & process related exhibits and the 2ndInnovation Pavilion which had models and displays from young entrepreneurs. Both these attracted good crowd.
The valedictory function on the 14th evening saw yet another top notch scientist, Dr. G Sivan , Director VSSC, Trivendrum, talking about a very important materials field namely electronic materials requiring urgent attention of the gathering of materials scientists.
Based on the feedbacks received during & after the show, it will be justified to say that MET + HTS event started in the year 2014 at Gandhinagar, has created a niche for Emerging technologies and served to become a unique platform for networking & knowledge sharing among Materials and Heattreat professionals, academicians, R&D& production Engineers, Service provider and end users. Regardless of the applications in the industries of defense, infrastructure, roads, railways, energy, shipbuilding, aerospace etc., this platform provides a venue for companies and individuals to grow business opportunities understand the industry and showcase new innovations in products and technology.
